Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

At his core, Thancred Waters is a selfless man who would do anything at all to defend his family. Over the years, that family has grown from the orphans he led in Limsa Lominsa or the Circle of Knowing, to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, to the whole of Eorzea and beyond, and even to worlds beyond their own. He's a man who came up from literally nothing, meeting an influential scholar by happenstance which set the course of his life, leaving him to also be a man who believes in making opportunities for others. He is a capable man who can, at times, be subjected to self-doubt but whose resourcefulness had led more than once to his surviving in situations that would have destroyed someone of lesser talent.

He is a man of tenacious resolve fueled by the memory of the time he allowed his self-doubt to weaken him enough to allow Lahabrea to possess him and using hiim as a tool to nearly unmake the world. It serves as a constant reminder of what could happen if he allowed his uncertainty to cloud his mind and he uses it to fuel his drive to find solutions to even world-shattering problems by any means necessary. His tenacity is only rivaled by his selflessness, which go hand in hand when he sets his mind to the protection of others. Someone had to stand their ground in the face of overwhelming odds, after all. It may as well be him.

First impressions of Thancred these days will give you a man of quiet charisma who has a smile for those he meets as well as a healthy curiosity for new lands and new experiences, an open mind and heart with which he welcomes all new people he meets, and a slightly flippant sarcasm that couples as a coping mechanism in the midst of the unexpected. In his youth, he was charming, witty, fliratious and somewhat crass at times, but that personality has matured into a quiet certainty and stability that is palpable in his interactions with others.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Safeguarding those he cares for is his chief driving force and it has inspired him to reinvent himself to compensate for his handicap to prevents him from being able to channel Aether. He's let his perceived shortcomings hold him back in the past to the detriment not only of his friends and family but also the world and he refuses to let that happen again.

As a young man, Thancred idolized Louisoix Leveilleur, the man happenstance would have him attempt to rob and who saw such potential in Thancred he took him home and sponsored his attendance at the Studium, and believed wholeheartedly in Louisoix's vision of a world united, but his purpose was somewhat esoteric until he met Ascilla. Renaming her MInfilia to protect her from Garlean assassins, he began to think of Minfilia as something like a little sister and it make it his mission to protect her, staying by her side as she helped found the Scions of the Seventh Dawn after the fall of Louisoix.

After being drawn to the First by the Crystal Exarch's call, he found her reincarnation in a girl he later named Ryne, teaching her to protect herself as he identified she may not always be within reach of his protection. While it took him a while to warm to the growing bone he and the girl shared because of his memories of Minfilia, seeing to her protection and supporting her goals was the driving force behind his involvement in events on the First, his relationship with the young Ryne even serving as a means of healing for the Archon as he watched her grow and embrace her fate and also to seize a life she wanted rather than following what was set out for her.

Serving as Ryne's mentor and father figure allowed Thancred to find it within himself to forgive his inability to protect the original Minfilia and went a long way to solidify for the man his own abilities as equal to those of his fellow Scions to spite their capabilities to shape Aether to this will or puzzle out the mysteries of the world. It taught him he could rely on his own resourcefulness and ability to think outside the box to solve problems and most importantly: he is enough.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

As I mentioned previously, this was not always the case. First tasked with safeguarding Ul'dah at the tender age of seventeen and having matriculated in the presence of greatness, while exceedingly capable, Thancred could never fully shake the feeling he was walking in shoes far too big for his feet. The loss of Louisoix at Carteneau only served to prove to the youth the stakes were too high and failure was not an option. This doubt he was strong enough to oppose the villains who would sink the realm into chaos led to his being vulnerable to the influence and eventual possession by the Ascian Lahabrea, which allowed the foe to appropriate all Thancred's knowledge of the Scions' movements, locations, weaknesses and strengths; an event which nearly resulted in the death not only of the Scions themselves but the fall of Eorzea itself.

To salt the wound, following closely on the heels of that failure, the Scions were betrayed by their own men, necessitating escape. Thancred and Minfilia were separated and Thancred would never see the bubbling, beautiful woman she'd become ever again, at least not as she was. Minfilia perished in the escape. He internalized that loss as a failure to protect her, one that became a driving force in his life ever afterward.

Where he was once too frivolous in his interactions and could, at times, allow himself to be distracted by leisure in pleasure even when on assignment, these failures have instead caused him to swing in the other direction, pushing himself beyond his limits and foregoing rest and relaxation in the selfless pursuit of protecting and serving others. He has a tendency to push himself beyond his limits and it does, at times, fall to his companions to pull him back from the brink and convince him to take a break.

Abilities & Inventory: Thancred has all the abilities of the Gunbreaker Job, which affords him access to shields, explosive rounds, and a wide range of blade attacks through the use of Aether-charged rounds. Note: Thancred will need to secure a means to recharge these canisters as he is unable to manipulate the Aether necessary to do so.

He is trained and highly skilled in wilderness and urban survival as well as espionage.

ARMADA SELECTION

It should be noted, as he was trained and has a gifted talent for infiltration, Thancred is highly versatile and could easily fit in with either the Coursairs or the Paladins, though his dogged dedication to the preservation of knowledge, the safety of others, and the safekeeping of the star as a whole rather than personal goals does lend him more to the Paladin Armada rather than the Coursairs. In short, I could really see him as part of either faction and feel free to put him where his number is needed the most.
